"When you have physicians who are responsible for young residents and training them, they are viewed like gods,” said Marshall, “The system protects those people.”
"Kathryn Marshall, the lawyer representing the claimants, said the complaint is ultimately working towards ending the pattern of systemic discrimination in the union for Jewish members that’s been going on for years. “In this country, we have human rights,” she said, pointing to Section 6 of the Ontario Human Rights Code, which states that every person has a right to equal treatment with respect to membership in any trade union, trade or occupational association."
“Her objective is to have there be changes in the legal industry and to expose law firms which are engaging in really bad conduct – and there are many,” says Kathryn Marshall, Purnell’s lawyer. “It’s sort of an open secret in law that law can be a very toxic work environment.”
"In this particular case, the important thing for me and Mr. Savage is holding the military to account and getting them to right a wrong," said Marshall
Marshall: "It was an implied term of Ms. Ras's employment as a councillor with the city that it would maintain a workplace free from harassment, provide a safe and healthy work environment, and conduct an unbiased, fulsome and transparent investigation into any complaints of harassment or bullying"
Marshall: "A complaint at the commission can not only result in payment of denied wages but also monetary damages for alleged discrimination. It can also force policy changes such as pay equity"
"In a nutshell, he was targeted by a number of individuals and groups who had their own agendas and motivations and scapegoated him for various reasons," said Kathryn Marshall"
Marshall: “They really wanted him to espouse a certain liberal worldview they thought he should be espousing as a member of the Black community”
Marshall: “I am taking the legal position – which is the correct position – that my client was owed every single employment protection that any other employee in this province has"
